SHEFFIELD, IA -- Edward Smit, 54, of Sheffield, died Monday (March 10, 1997) at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, with Pastor Steve Hollingsworth officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Grarup Funeral Home.

Edward H. Smit was born on April 8, 1942, on the family farm near Meservey, the son of Ben and Ida (Koenen) Smit. He attended the Meservey school system graduating with the class of 1960. Following school, he began working for Lloyd Faaborg, operating heavy equipment and later became a certified plumber. He was united in marriage to Georgia Pope on April 13, 1963, in the Little Brown Church, Nashua. In 1965, he began working for Sukup Manufacturing Co. of Sheffield serving in many capacities until in later years, working as a new product engineer until retiring on July 1, 1996. Edward enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Georgia, of Sheffield; four daughters, Lorri Hall and her husband, Todd; Kathy Nierengarten and her husband, Terry; Cheryl Larson and her husband, Rick, and Janet Larson and her husband, Lance, all of Sheffield; three grandchildren, Kelsey Nierengarten, Tyler Larson and Courtney Larson; his mother, Ida Smit of Meservey; four sisters, Betty Nedved and her husband, Elmer, of Garner; Ione Hayungs and her husband, Ernest of Clear Lake; Lois Jenison of Belmond, and JoAnn Ritter and her husband, Mike, of Goodell; two brothers, Harlan Smit and his wife, JoAnne, of Sheffield, and Alvin Smith and his wife, Jackie, of Thornton. He was preceded in death by his father.
