Velma Williamson Vernon, age 96, of Anamosa died Wednesday August 19, 2009 at the Anamosa Care Center following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 11:00 Saturday morning, August 22, 2009 at the Goettsch Funeral Home Anamosa, where friends may call from 9 until service time. Interment will be in the Wilcox Cemetery, Viola. Carla Burge will officiate at the services.

Surviving is a daughter, Shirley (Dick) Biggart, 4 step-children, Ruth (Jack) Switzer, Wayne (Carolyn) Vernon, Keith (Marilou) Vernon, Norman”Luke”Seeley all of Anamosa, 3 grandchildren, Carolyn , Lloyd (Lorie) and Betty Biggart, 6 great-grandchildren, Chris, Scott and Alex Biggart, Ally Paulsen, Melinda Morarie, Kyra Biggart-Frazier and a great-great-grandchild, Kyden Scott and many step-Grandchildren, great-Grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her Parents, her husbands, Lloyd Williamson and Lewis Vernon a great-grandson Shane Scott, a step-son Charles Vernon, 2 sisters, Ruth Brown and Beulah Ratcliff and 3 brothers, Cecil, Martin and Harold Bige.

Velma L. Bige was born December 15, 1912 at Woolstock, Iowa. She was the daughter of Ollie H. and Alice Allen Bige. She graduated as the Valedictorian of the class of 1931 at the Woolstock High School. Velma Bige and Lloyd Williamson were married December 26, 1933 at Indianola, Iowa. The couple worked on a farm near Eagle Grove before moving to Waterloo, where Lloyd worked at John Deere and Velma worked as a cleaning lady. In 1935 they started farming near Troy Mills later moving to a farm North of Marion. In 1958 they bought a farm between Viola and Fairview where they farmed until 1968 when they moved to Anamosa. Lloyd preceded her in death on January 11, 1973. Velma married Lewis Vernon on December 14, 1980 at Morley, Iowa. The couple lived in Anamosa. He preceded her in death on July 23, 1999. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the U.M.W., Wapsiketa and the Jones Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Velma continued to live independently for several years and lived for several months with her daughter before going to the care center in August of 2006. Velma’s passion was baking pies and giving them to family and friends. She was a kind and loving lady always putting others ahead of herself.
