Dows teen dies in crash
One driver released from hospital, other in critical condition

By LINDSEY MUTCHLER Messenger staff writer

CLARION, Iowa - A two-car collision in rural Wright County left one teen dead and two others injured Tuesday afternoon. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Garrett Roberts, 15, of Dows, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mercy North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City after a car driven by Nathan Wanken, 16, of Clarion, struck the passenger side of a vehicle driven by Cory Adkins, 16, also of Clarion. The accident occurred at an uncontrolled gravel road intersection two miles southwest of Clarion at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Adkins was driving eastbound on 240th Street with Roberts in the passenger side, as Wanken was traveling northbound on Keokuk Avenue. The impact sent both vehicles into the northeast ditch. Adkins and Wanken were wearing their seat belts, Roberts wasn't. However, a spokeswoman with the Iowa State Patrol said Roberts may not have survived even he had worn his seatbelt given crash's point of impact on the passenger side.

The Clarion Police Department, Fire Department, EMS team, the Wright County sheriff and the Iowa State Patrol arrived on the scene. Neil Morenz, with the Iowa State Patrol, said all three teenagers were transported to the Wright Medical Center in Clarion. Roberts and Adkins were then transferred to Mercy North Iowa where Roberts was pronounced dead, Morenz said. A spokeswoman at Mercy North Iowa in Mason City said Adkins is still in critical condition. According to Gina Radechel, of Wright Medical Center in Clarion, Wanken was treated for injuries and released. Morenz said the cause of the accident is still under investigation, and even though the intersection was uncontrolled there were "no line-of-sight problems."

All three teenagers were sophomores at Clarion-Goldfield High School. The school's principal, Dennis March, said a group of 30 to 35 students gathered outside of the high school Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. to write notes and talk about the tragedy. March added that the notes students wrote were taped up to the walls of the school's media center, which he said will remain posted for the next three to four days.

"I can't imagine how many square feet of poster board is covering the walls," he said. In addition to writing their thoughts and feelings about the tragic accident, March said six to eight adults from various community organizations, such as area churches and school staff, were available to counsel students on a somber last day of school. March described Roberts as a "smart kid" who was well liked by his peers. Sports activities scheduled for the evening were postponed.
