Garner Signal - Garner, Iowa
12 February 1908

Died, in Los Angeles, California, January 30, 1908, William Finch. William Finch was born February 19, 1842, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and came to Iowa about 1863, settling at Belmond, where he married Miss Gittie E. Dumond, January 1, 1865. He was closely identified with the early history of both Wright and Hancock Counties. He came with his family to Hancock County as early as 1871 or 1872, where at Garner he conducted business for several years, but forming a partnership with W. C. Hayward, present Secretary of State, went into business at Davenport. Some few years ago, he came back to old town of Belmond. For several years he has suffered a great deal from general breaking down of his physical system, which led him to the mild climate of California and which seemed to build him up for a while. He finally bought property there, designing to make that his home, but he never seemed more contented than when back with his family and friends at Belmond and Garner. He had looked that Grim Destroyer, Death, in the face at close range more than once, but did not quail, for he knew that in Christ, his Redeemer lived, and why should he fear. He was a man whom to know was to love. The surviving members of his family are Mrs. Gittie E. Finch, and three daughters, Mrs. W. I. Rosecrans and Mrs. A. E. Martin, both of Belmond, and Mrs. W. S. Pritchard of Hancock County.
