KANAWHA — Harold L. Michelson, 97, of Kanawha, died Sunday (April 25, 2010) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. Funeral services for Harold Michelson will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 29, at the Kanawha Lutheran Church in Kanawha with Pastor Karen Rossing Grandall officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, at Ewing Funeral Home, 118 East Second St., in Kanawha, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. KANAWHA — Harold L. Michelson, 97, of Kanawha, passed away Sunday (April 25, 2010) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. Funeral services for Harold Michelson will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at the Kanawha Lutheran Church in Kanawha, with Pastor Karen Rossing Grandall officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Ewing Funeral Home, 118 E. Second St. in Kanawha, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.Harold, the son of Severt and Ellen Marie (Soma) Michelson, was born Jan. 11, 1913, on the family farm near Kanawha, where he also attended country school. In March of 1935, Harold was part of the Civilian Conservation Corps, which built the Pilot Knob observation tower and amphitheater. Harold met Marie at the original Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. The couple enjoyed dancing and would go every weekend. They were united in marriage on Sept. 28, 1940, in Mason City. Harold entered the United States Army on Nov. 6, 1942. He attended airplane mechanic school in Omaha, Neb. graduating second in his class. Harold was also stationed at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. Following his discharge, he returned to Kanawha where he was engaged in farming with his brothers Norris and John. Harold retired from farming in 1974, and the couple moved into Kanawha but his heart never left the farm. Harold was a lifelong member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church. He was a collector of clocks, grower of tomatoes and an all around tinkerer.
Harold is survived by his wife, Marie; son, Bernard; grandchildren: Laurie (David) Vorland, Dean Michelson (friend Rhonda), Christy Hewitt (friend Karl), Jason (Tina) Hanson, Kim Hanson (friend Andrew), Travis Michelson (friend Jessica) and Tina Michelson (friend Douglas); great-grandchildren: James and Kyle Michelson, Emily and Harley Vorland, Jesse Hewitt, Anthony Pigman, Paige, Riley and Keira Hanson. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughters, Amanda and Katie Vorland; sister, Melva O’Banion; brothers, Gilford, Sam, Norris, John and Ernie; and many nieces and nephews.
