WATERLOO -- Virgil E. Sellers, 88, of Earlville, formerly of Marion and Waterloo, died Monday, April 10, 2006 at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 27, 1918, in Melrose, son of Everette and Cora Sims Sellers. On Nov. 7, 1942, he married Bernice Ida Taylor in Charlotte, S.C. She died Jan. 31, 1988. He later married Verda Belle Hunt on June 11, 1995, in Earlville. Mr. Sellers graduated from Goodell High School in 1937, then worked as a farm hand and performed local flying services. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1940 and flew 65 bombing missions during World War II. He also was a flight instructor and served during the Korean War. He retired as a major from the U.S. Air Force in 1962 after 22 years of service. In 1963, he returned to Iowa and attended the College of Automation in Des Moines. He worked for Collins Radio Co., Cedar Rapids, until 1970. He then delivered mobile homes for Morgan Drive-Away. In 1974, he became a partner in Creataform, Ltd., Cedar Falls, retiring from there in 1981.

Survivors include: his wife, who died April 11, 2006; two daughters, Virginia (Ron) Hovick of Waterloo and Linda (Jim) Singer of Lindstrom, Minn.; a stepdaughter, Carol (Don) Mosier of Cedar Rapids; a stepson, Calvin (Sharon) Hunt of Kimberling City, Mo.; eight grandchildren and three great-granddaughters; three brothers, Donald of Hanlontown, Robert of Mason City and Carl (Joan) Sellers of Bemus Point, N.Y.; and a sister, Mary Nolte of Russell. Preceded in death by: a brother, Burdette.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Friday at Earlville United Parish, with committal services and military honors at 4 p.m. in Garden of Memories, Waterloo. Public visitation 4 to 8 p.m. today at Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville, with a 7 p.m. Order of Eastern Star service and an 8 p.m. Masonic service. Visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church. Memorials: may be directed to Knights Templar Eye Foundation or the Earlville United Parish.

Funeral Services for Virgil will be at 1:30 pm on Friday, April 14, 2006, at the Earlville United Parish with Pastor Ross Wyman officiating. Visitation for Virgil and Verda Belle will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville, where there will be a 7:00 pm Order of Eastern Star Service and a 8:00 pm Masonic Service. A combined luncheon and fellowship will begin at 11:30 am Friday at the Earlville Community Center followed by a visitation for Virgil after 12:30 pm at the church. Committal service with military honors for Virgil will be at 4:00 pm at the Garden of Memories in Waterloo.

Virgil was born on February 27, 1918, in Melrose, Iowa, the son of Everette & Cora (Sims) Sellers. He moved with his family in 1929 to Goodell, Iowa, where he graduated from the Goodell High School in 1937. He then worked as a farm hand and performed local flying services. Virgil joined the Army Air Corps on September 4, 1940. He flew 65 bombing missions during World War II and was awarded the Airman�s Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was also a flight instructor and served during the Korean Conflict. Virgil retired as a Major from the U.S. Air Force on October 31, 1962, after 22 years of service. In 1963, Virgil returned to Iowa and attended the College of Automation in Des Moines. He worked for Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids until 1970. He then delivered mobile homes for Morgan Drive-Away. In 1974, Virgil became a partner in Creataform, Ltd, Cedar Falls, retiring from there in October of 1981. On November 7, 1942, Virgil married Bernice Ida Taylor in Charlotte, South Carolina. Bernice died on January 31, 1988. Virgil married Verda Belle Hunt on June 11, 1995 in Earlville where the couple made their home. Virgil was a member of the Earlville United Parish in Earlville. He was a Past Master and 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and was a member of the Shrine, Order of the Eastern Star, and White Shrine of Jerusalem. Virgil was a Past Grand Commander of Iowa. He loved boating, fishing and spending time with his family.

Virgil was survived by his current wife, Verda Belle Hunt, Earlville, who passed away on April 11, 2006. He is also survived by his two children, Virginia (Ron) Hovick of Waterloo, Iowa, and Linda (Jim) Singer of Lindstrom, Minnesota; two step-children, Carol (Don) Mosier of Cedar Rapids, and Calvin (Sharon) Hunt of Kimberling City, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Steve (Shelly) Hovick, Carissa (Lucas) Gillmore and Danielle Mosier, Kristie, Kenny and Kevin Hunt, Laurie DeMoss, and John (Jyl) DeMoss; three great granddaughters, Mackensie, Delaney, and Aynslie; three brothers, Donald Sellers of Hanlontown, Robert Sellers of Mason City, and Carl (Joan) Sellers of Bemus Point, New York, and a sister, Mary Nolte of Russell. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Everette & Cora Sellers; his first wife, Bernice Sellers; and a brother, Burdette Sellers.
