A Civil War Veteran and old Pioneer Passed away.

Edward Phipps was born near Hopkinton, Mass. September, 18th. 1841 and died June 16th. 1918, at Renwick, Iowa of acute indigestion. The deceased was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Co. B. 16th. Wisconsin. He was honorably discharged August 21st. 1865 following an attack of typhoid fever. On February 29th. 1869 he was married to Miss Philena Thompson of Rio, Wisconsin. To them were born six children, three sons and three daughters, W. E. Phipps, Miss Ora Phipps, and Mrs. C. H. Long, all of Renwick. Mrs. S. E. Mosely of Cedar Falls and Walter H. Phipps of Griffin, Sask. One died at birth. In the spring of 1872 they came overland to Iowa, settling on a farm in Wright County three miles North East of Renwick until 16 years ago when they moved to town. In the first years of life in Iowa they endured the hardships that all pioneers settlers have to endure during this time. They joined the Christian Union Church. Later in life after moving to town they united with the Baptist church.

The deceased was apparently in his usual health which was not good as for years he had suffered with asthma, when he ate his dinner on Sunday and then, shortly after, remarking that it looked like it would be cooler on the north porch of a neighbors house he went there and sat for a while. Soon his daughter who lives at home heard him calling her and went to his assistance, finding him suffering intense pain. A son living near and a neighbor helped him home and everything possible was done to alleviate the pain but nothing seemed to relieve his suffering for some time. About eleven o'clock he got easier and the family thought he was going to pass the night quietly in sleep but as they watched, a change came and he passed away easily and peacefully at midnight.

Those left to mourn, are his wife two sons, three daughters, three grand children and a brother and Sister, the later two living in Mass. The funeral was held at the Baptist Church, Rev. Nicholson of Goldfield a former pastor and friend preaching the sermon from the text found in the Second Cor. 6:1.

The male quartet consisting of Merle B. Richardson, Irwin Peer, S Paul Figi and Rev. A. W. Schlesselman sang three selections. The one "When My Soul Reaches Home" was especially appreciated by the family of the deceased. Many beautiful flowers were given by friends and the offers of sympathy and help to the family were generously and kindly given.
