Philena Thompson was born in Albright, New York, December 8, 1847. At the age of sixteen years she with her parents moved to Springvale, Wisconsin, where she lived until her marriage to Edward Phipps in February 1869, at Rio, Wisconsin. After one year spent at his father's home at Hopkinton, Mass., they returned to Wisconsin, where they lived until the spring of 1872, when they came by the overland route to Iowa, settling on a farm three and one-half miles northeast of the present site of Renwick. Here they lived until 1902 when they moved to Renwick, leaving the youngest son, Walter, in charge of the farm. In the early years of their married life they united with the Christian Union church. After moving to Renwick they joined the Baptist church, of which the deceased was a member at the time of her death, but owing to poor health had not been able to attend services very much for several years.
There are left to mourn her loss, two sons and three daughters: W. E. Phipps of Renwick, W. H. Phipps of Griffin, Saskatchewan, Canada, Mrs. S. E. Mosely of Cedar Falls, Mrs. C. H. Long, living near Renwick and Miss Ora Phipps who cared for her mother in her declining years. There are also four grandchildren, and one brother living at Steamboat Spring, Colo. The husband passed away in June, 1918. Another son died in infancy.
Mrs. Phipps passed away Thursday morning, May 20, at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 20 days. Funeral services were held in the Baptist church at Renwick, on Sunday, May 23rd, at 2 p. m. conducted by Rev. Nicholson of Goldfield. A large congregation of sympathizing friends were in attendance.
