William Clifton "Pat" Murphy, 85, of Jefferson City died Sunday, September 18, 2005, at his home. He was born January 10, 1920, in Owensville, a son of William Allen and Mamie Letha Tayloe Murphy. He attended Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri, and Carlinville College in Carlinville, Illinois.

On June 17, 1950, in Grinnell, Iowa, Pat was married to Dorothy J. State, who preceded him in death on November 10, 2004. From 1945 to 1965 Pat worked for General Telephone Company in Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa, serving almost every capacity within the company from lineman-repairman to General Manager of the state of Missouri. From 1965 until his retirement in 1968, he owned and operated Triangle Telephone Company in Dixon. Pat enjoyed his retirement until he was appointed by Gov. Bond in 1973 and again in 1981 to serve as Commissioner of the Missouri State Water Patrol. He served as President of the Kiwanis Club and Director of the Chamber of Commerce, both in Kearney, Nebraska; Director of Rotary Club and Co-Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in Grinnell, Iowa; President of the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce in Dixon, Missouri; and was a Director of the Cosmopolitan Club and Memorial Community Hospital, both in Jefferson City . Pat was also Director of the Missouri Telephone Association. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson City .

He is survived by: one son, Larry Murphy and wife Diane of Dixon; two daughters, Jean Hoerschgen and husband David of Jefferson City and Joan Smith and husband Neal of Franklin, Tennessee; one brother, Robert Earl Murphy and wife Inez of Longmont, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Rhonda Stewart, Billy Murphy, Mike Murphy, Matt Murphy, Allison Hoerschgen, Nathan Hoerschgen, Amanda Smith, Erin Smith and one great grandson, Daniel Stewart. He was also preceded in death by one sister, June Montague.

Friends will be received from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Directors- Jefferson City Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. John Hobratschk officiating. Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church. Arrangements are under the direction of HOUSER-MILLARD Funeral Directors, 2613 W. Main.
