Hope Helen Hadley Hanson passed away on February 15, 2010 in Santa Rosa, CA at the age of 97. Hope and Ed Hanson were high school sweethearts and were married for 74 years. Ed passed away in August of 2009. Hope was born in Thor, Iowa and graduated from Eagle Grove High School with honors. One of Hope's proudest achievements was being selected as Health Queen of Iowa. She was eighteen and had her picture on the 'front page' of the Des Moines Register. As the prize, Hope was awarded a trip to Chicago. Hope attended Iowa State Teachers' College and received her teaching certificate. She taught school in Nevada, Iowa in a one-room schoolhouse. After Hope and Ed were married, they moved to Schenectady, New York. Three years later, Ed's job brought them to California. They lived in Berkeley for over 30 years. Living in the Bay Area afforded them many opportunities to attend musical theatre productions and enjoy the many cultural activities in the area. Upon retirement, they moved to Oakmont. They loved living in Oakmont; playing bridge, golf and the golfing trips. Travel was one of their greatest joys and they made several trips to Europe and Asia. Hope and Ed were a team and their many friends will always remember them as warm, friendly, generous and very talented. Hope loved being active in her P.E.O. Chapter TH. She was a very creative person. She was a Girl Scout Leader for 12 years and taught her girls many different crafts. She was an excellent seamstress and made beautiful garments for her daughter. When her mother, Susie Hadley, visited from Iowa, they spent many wonderful hours together making braided rugs and pine cone wreaths. Refinishing furniture was one of Hope's favorite activities. Hope is survived by her daughter Susie Bantis, son-in-law Alex; grandson Chris and wife Jana; and three great grandsons; Gavin (13), Colin (11), and Simon (6). Friends are invited to attend a Joyous Memorial Service on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in the Oakmont Gardens Activity Room. In memory of Hope Hanson, donations can be sent to Chapter TH, P.E.O., 8764 Oakmont Drive, Santa Rosa, CA 95409. All donations will be contributed to the P.E.O. Scholarship Fund.
