Elk City News Democrat, Elk City, OklahomaDEATH OF J. W. FINCH
J. W. Finch, formerly of near Grimes, but who has been living in Weatherford, Okla., for several years died in that city Tuesday of last week. Mr. Finch was also an early settler in Harrison county, Mo., where we knew him before coming to Oklahoma. He moved to old Roger Mills County seventeen years ago, the year that the News-Democrat family came, and living near each other we visited many times in the early days here. It is with deep regret we learn of his death.
The following is from the Weatherford Democrat of last week: Joseph W. Finch Dead.
Joseph Wood Finch died at his home in this city Tuesday after a month's illness. He had been a familiar figure on the downtown streets for years and his passing will be a matter of genuine regret to his many friends here. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, March 20, 1848, and at the time of his death was nearly seventy years of age. He was married at Council Bluffs, Iowa, August 17, 1874, to Miss Margaret Boucher, and to this union seven children were born, all of whom with their mother survive. The children are, Walter Finch of El Reno, Mrs. B. F. Charles of Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. C. W. Friend of Joiner, Ark., E. F. Finch of this place, Chas. Finch of Clinton, Leonard Finch of Cheyenne and Ives Finch, now of the United States Army.
Mr. Finch was postmaster at Popejoy, Iowa, during both terms which Mr. Cleveland served as president. He came to Oklahoma with his family in 1901, taking up a homestead. He came to Weatherford in 1909, and this place has since been his home. Burial took place this morning in the cemetery at Hydro, the funeral mass being conducted by Rev. Father Albert Monett. The funeral was attended by a number from here and there were many beautiful floral offerings. Four of his sons were here for the funeral.
