KANAWHA, IA - Jane M. Mewes, 69, of Kanawha passed away Friday (March 12, 2010) at the Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City surrounded by her family. Funeral services for Jane Mewes will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 17, at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha with Pastor Don Morrison officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, at the Ewing Funeral Home in Kanawha.

Jane Marie Mewes, the daughter of Fred and Esther Walk, was born on the family farm near Kanawha on July 3, 1940. She was baptized and confirmed in Renwick. Following her graduation from Kanawha High School, she worked at various restaurants in the area and was united in marriage with Jack L. Mewes on July 2, 1966, in South Dakota. They resided on the farm southeast of Kanawha and were blessed with four children. Jane was a hard working and energetic person and was always busy. She drove the school bus for Kanawha Community School for many years, volunteered with the Kanawha EMTs, raised exotic birds, purebred cats and eventually registered dogs. Her work ethic was instilled at an early age helping on her parents' farm after the passing of her father. Jane's hobbies included shopping trips with her "girls," gardening, sewing and baking. Her caring, nurturing ways were always evident with her children and animals.

Jane is survived by her husband of 43 years, Jack; four children, Doug of Klemme, Tammy (Dana) Kraft of Kanawha, Jack Jr. of Kanawha and Kim (Jeff) Bates of Kanawha; 12 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; five siblings, Judy (Harold) Bohlen of Shakopee, Minn., Betty (Lyle) Faris of Kanawha, David (Doreen) Walk of Kanawha, Diane Omvig of Kanawha, and Donna (Todd) Wolf of Garner. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Esther Walk, and a brother, Bill Walk. Ewing Funeral Home, 602 North Main St., Clarion.
