HUMBOLDT, IA-- Gerald "Jerry" Heiter, 78, passed away January 20, 2010 at his home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Rutland Trinity Lutheran Church. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt. Mr. Heiter is survived by his wife, Joan of Humboldt; children, Michael (Nancy) Heiter of Charles City, Cathy (Kent) Crossley of Hardy, Tom Heiter of Salina, Kan., and John (Stacey) Heiter of Manson; two stepdaughters; 11 grandchildren; stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his brother Roger (Elaine) Heiter of Humboldt. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Melvin and Berlyn; and sisters, C. Ione Williams and Ulla Sanders.

Mr. Heiter is survived by his wife, Joan of Humboldt; children, Michael (Nancy) Heiter of Charles City, Cathy (Kent) Crossley of Hardy, Tom Heiter of Salina, KS, and John (Stacey) Heiter of Manson; 2 step-daughters; 11 grandchildren; step-grandchildren and great grandchildren; and his brother Roger (Elaine) Heiter of Humboldt. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Melvin and Berlyn; and sisters, C. Ione Williams and Ulla Sanders.

Gerald Lloyd Heiter, the son of A. T. and Vera (Green) Heiter, was born September 5, 1931 at Rolfe, Iowa. He received his education at Rolfe and Plover. Following his education Jerry worked at various jobs in the Fort Dodge area. In August of 1952, he enlisted into the United States Navy and served with the Seabees with the rank of MCBII in the Philippines during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge in 1956 he returned home. He was married to Kay Lothringer and to this union 3 children were born. The marriage was dissolved in 1966. On March 17, 1967, he was united in marriage to Joan Madsen and the couple had one child. They made their home at Humboldt where Jerry worked as a plumber and as the Sexton of Union Cemetery for many years. He and Joan then traveled the country and he worked as a security guard in a campground in Mesa, Arizona. In 1999, the couple returned to Humboldt. Jerry was a member of the Rutland Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed trips to casinos, card playing and especially enjoyed his time served as caretaker of Gotch Park in Humboldt.
