MASON CITY, IA - Jesse "Jess" A. Chase, 90, of Mason City died Tuesday (May 31, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Friday at the church. A memorial fund has been established in his name.

Jesse "Jess" A. Chase was born on a farm near Goodell, Iowa, to Fred and Elva (Lange) Chase on March 24, 1915. He attended schools in Goodell and Garner, graduating from Mason City High School in 1934. On Oct. 12, 1941, he married Helen Rusley, and they spent most of their long life together in Mason City. Jess worked as a refrigeration engineer at AMPI for 30 years, retiring in 1977. At the same time, he established his own woodworking and furniture refinishing business, a craft that began as a hobby while he was a teenager and became a passion that continued well into his 80s. He built many beautiful pieces of furniture for his home and family, as well as altar furniture for Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, where he was a council member for years.

Jess is survived by his daughters, Lynne (Wayne) Paulson of Chandler, Ariz., and Gayle (Robert) Bingham, of Apex, N.C.; three grandchildren: Emily and Kari Paulson and Christopher Bingham; and three nephews: Fred and Bruce Delahoyde and Allen Chase. His beloved wife, Helen, preceded him in death by 16 days. Jess will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by many whose lives he touched.
