Joan Rae Cox, age 79, of Hockessin, DE, died on January 10, 2010, at Cokesbury Village Health Center. Born in Iowa Falls, Iowa on June 9, 1930, Mrs. Cox graduated from high school in Dows, Iowa, and received her bachelor's degree in music from U.C.L.A. in 1953. She later took additional courses at Boston University and at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. In 1951, she married Roger L. Cox of Sac City, Iowa. In a teaching career that spanned more than thirty years, she taught both elementary grades and music in public and private schools in California, Indiana, and Delaware. As a Department of the Army civilian employee, she also taught music at the Paris American Elementary School in France, and fifth grade at the army school at Camp Darby, near Pisa, Italy, where her oldest child was born two weeks after she finished the school year. After returning to this country, she taught elementary grades and music in Indiana and Delaware public and private schools. She also served as a Head Start director for several years in Indiana.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years; her four children, Julie Atkinson and husband, George, of Middletown, Delaware; Laurie Herald and husband, Mike, of Bear, Delaware; Stephen Cox and wife, Chris, of Sag Harbor, New York; and Allan Cox of Wilmington, Delaware; and seven granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm, on Sunday, January 24, at Cokesbury Village Auditorium, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE.
