Alyce M. Ayala, 67, of Des Moines, died on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at her home in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9 in the Chapel of Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home. Friends may call from 4 until 6 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors include her daughters, Eileen Long of Fort Dodge, Lisa Fedkenheuer of Goldfield, Angel Schwartz of Des Moines; sons, Joe Ayala of Des Moines, Lewis Ayala of Goldfield; 24+ grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Dr. Robert Slawson of Maryland, Jerry Slawson of Lehigh; and his sister, Evelyn Sanders of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Marguerite Culver Slawson; her husband, Joe Ayala in 1999; brother, James Slawson; and a sister, Susan Slawson.

Alyce Marie Slawson was born June 1, 1942 in Lehigh, Iowa. She attended schools there and graduated from Lehigh High School. In 1959, she was married to Richard McCormick and the couple made their home in Fort Dodge. The couple later divorced. On June 30, 1962, she was united in marriage to Joe Ayala and they made their home in Denver, Colo. In 1963, they moved to Des Moines. Alyce worked as a banquet organizer at various restaurants and motels including; Mama Laconas, the Latin King, Noah's Ark, the Howard Johnson, Marriot Motel, and the Dobbs Restaurant in the Des Moines Airport. She retired in 1996. The most important thing in Alyce's life was her family and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
