HAWARDEN, Iowa - George H. Abbott, 84, of Hawarden died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at American Lutheran Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Jeff Swanson officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Mr. Abbott was born Feb. 26, 1917, in Hawarden, the son of Guy and Jessie (Todd) Abbott. He attended school in Hawarden. In 1933, he began with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Salem, Mo., and Clarion, Iowa. He later worked for Bergs Dairy in Hawarden. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945, stationed in the Pacific Theater.

He married Marge (Velgersdyk) Carlson on April 21, 1950, in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was employed with Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 41 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Roger Abbott of Clarion; a stepson and his wife, Virgil and Judy Carlson of Canton, S.D.; a stepdaughter and her husband, Verlys and Charles Sandahl of Hawarden; two sisters, LaVeta Vande Hoef of Garden Grove, Calif., and Lillian Swanson Blomberg of Matilija Hot Springs, Calif.; eight stepgrandchildren; 18 great-stepgrandchildren; and a great-great-stepgrandson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd; two sisters, Margaret Westling and Jean De Young Schaebble; and several nephews.
