November 6, 2009MAQUOKETA, Iowa - Gary E. Redling, 64, of Maquoketa, Iowa, passed away from Melanoma on Tuesday afternoon, November 3, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 7, 2009, at the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa. Burial will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.
Gary Edward Redling was born on April 30, 1945, in Ames, Iowa. He was the oldest child of Paul Frederick and Zona Ruth (Zeihon) Redling. At an early age, his mother died and his father remarried Marge Tyler, who became an influential figure in Gary's life. Gary grew up in Jewell, Iowa, and graduated from Clarion High School in 1963. He then attended Luther College at Decorah, an area he truly loved. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967. He furthered his education and received his Master's Degree from the University of Iowa in 1972. He married Linda Louise Lehman on October 12, 1974, in Johnson County, Iowa. Gary had worked as the Director of Human Services for the State of Iowa in Dubuque and Davenport. He had also worked for families of Northeast Iowa for several years. He then began a successful career in sales, working first for the Maquoketa Sentinel Press, U.S. Cellular and Myatt Construction. For the past 15 years he had worked for the Heritage Division of Goodwill Publishers in Gastonia, North Carolina, where he had received numerous sales awards. Gary was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Izaak Walton League and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Club, all in Maquoketa. Gary was passionate about many things but most of all he loved his children and his family and spending time with his good friends. He enjoyed his pontoon boat, golfing, woodworking, target shooting and traveling to Door County, Wisconsin. He was known as an honest, earnest, hard working, gentle, kind and caring man.
Gary is survived by his wife, Lin Redling, of Maquoketa; children, Amy (Craig) Schiffer, of Summit, N.J., and Matt (Evie) Redling, of Maquoketa; eight grandchildren, Zach, Jessica, Zoe, Annie, Gabe, Bobbie, Brianna and Jake; brothers, Michael Redling, of Maquoketa, Marvin "Bud" (Rebecca) Redling, of Door County, Wis., and Ted (Sylvia) Redling, of Arvada, Colo.; and sisters, Irene Dobbins, of Moline, Ill., and Melissa Brown, of Story City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and stepmother. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Gary Edward Redling Memorial Fund has been established.
