DONNA, Texas — John Ivan Beer, 79, passed away Wednesday (April 7, 2004) at the McAllen Heart Hospital in Texas. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 15, at the United Methodist Church in Hansell, Iowa.

John was born on June 14, 1924, on a farm north of Popejoy, Iowa. He was the son of John and Mabel (Armstrong) Beer. He attended schools in Popejoy, and graduated from high school in Hansell. Upon graduation, he attended college at Iowa State University in Ames, until he enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country during World War II. On Dec. 6, 1952, he married Doris (Bauge) Beer in Hampton. After his military discharge, he resided and farmed on the family farm in Hampton until 1981. He then worked at A. Swine buy station and he was a custodian for the Franklin County Fair for many years. His vacations were spent working at the Iowa State Fair campgrounds. He managed the Trails End Mobile Home Park in Weslaco, Texas, and at the time of his death, he was a manager of the Iowa State Fair campgrounds. He and his wife were winter Texans and had been spending their winters in Texas for the last 24 years. He had been a 4-H leader and a member of the United Methodist Church. He was also an avid wood craftsman.

He is survived by his loving wife, Doris Beer, of Donna; his sons, Thomas Beer and wife, Jan, of Castroville, Texas, and Timothy Beer, of Hampton; and his daughter, Teresa Fisher, of Fond Du Lac, Wis. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Pamela Otto, of Bronx, N.Y., Laura Beer, of Lincoln, Neb., and Magan Fisher, of Fond Du Lac, Wis.; his sister, Ruth Klousia, of Ozark, Mo.; three nephews; and four great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents. Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home of Weslaco, Texas. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.
