April 16, 1996MASON CITY, IA--Harold G. Thomas, 58, of 3365 Dancer Ave., Osage, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (April 13, 1996) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Raymond Burkle and Matthew Berry, deacon, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., where there will be a 5 p.m. Moose memorial service, a 6 p.m. Masonic service by Harding Lodge No. 649 A.F.& A.M. and a 7 p.m. Scripture wake service. Memorials may be given to the Harold G. Thomas Memorial Fund.
Harold G. Thomas was born Aug. 8, 1937, in Dows, a son of Sumner C. and Alta L. (Simpson) Thomas. He moved to Mason City as a child, attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School in 1955. Harold worked for Northwestern States Portland Cement Company until May 8, 1967, when he joined the Mason City Police Department as a patrolman. He retired as a captain in August of 1992. After retirement, Harold worked at the Plant Ranch, Diaper Depot and Lewis Systems. Harold married Melissa Holding on Oct. 8, 1994. They made their home in Osage.
Harold was a very special, kind, caring and understanding man who was always willing to go the extra mile for anyone. His interests included traveling, gardening and fishing. But most of all, he enjoyed his family and friends. Harold was a member of the Mason City Police Association, where he was active in many community service projects. He was a member of High 12, where he served as past president, and was past president of the Iowa-South Dakota District of High 12. He was a member of the Mason City York Rite; El Kahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids, where he was a past president; was past president of the North Iowa Shrine Club; was a member of Harding Lodge No. 649 A.F. & A.M., where he was past master; and the Moose Lodge. He volunteered several hours teaching CPR for the Red Cross. He was a Boy Scout leader and Little League coach.
Survivors include his loving wife, Melissa Thomas of Osage; his stepdaughter, Rebecca, of Osage; three sons, David Thomas and his wife, Jeanette, of Fort Hauchuca, Ariz., Deric Thomas and his wife, Deborah, of Manly, and Danne Thomas and his wife, Theresa, of Minneapolis; one daughter, Roxanne Haberek of Mason City; 14 grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Uker and her husband, Jerry, of Osage; and one brother, Richard Thomas and his wife, Barbara, of Crescent; many nieces and nephews; and his father-in-law, Leo Holding of Dougherty. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson and one niece.
