MASON CITY - Louis Bosveld, 94, of Mason City died Wednesday (Dec. 9, 2009) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 19, 2009) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles of First United Methodist Church officiating. There will be no visitation. Upon his wishes his body has been donated to the University of Iowa Hospitals. Interment services will take place at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Good Shepherd Health Center.

Louis Bosveld was born May 15, 1915, in Pella, the son of John and Gertrude (Nadort) Bosveld. He graduated from Pella High School in 1932 He then attended and graduated from Central College in Pella in 1937. Louis was married to Bernice E. Schalekamp on Aug. 12, 1938, in Sioux Center. He later received his master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1941. Louis taught high school math at Attica, where he also coached baseball and basketball. He then taught math and science and coached in Plymouth. He taught in Goldfield, Storm Lake and Red Oak. Louis served in the Navy from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1947. In 1951 he moved to Mason City from Red Oak, where he taught first at the Mason City High School, then taught science at the Mason City Junior College. He retired from teaching at North Iowa Area Community College in 1980. From 1982 until 1985 he taught in a Methodist school in Tonga, South Pacific. He was a lifetime member of the NEA and ISEA and was also a member of the YMCA and a longtime member of First United Methodist Church. Louis had a passion for reading and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Louis is survived by his two sons, Roger Bosveld and wife, Agnes, of St. Paul, Minn., and John Bosveld of Mason City; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Louis was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; son, James; brothers, Robert and Fred and sisters, Alice and Jeanette. Funeral arrangements are with Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, Mason City.
