Helen Marie Stueland, the daughter of Amos and Helen (Rasmussen) Folkedahl, was born in Goldfield, Iowa, on May 18, 1924. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth, graduating from Goldfield High School in 1942. Helen attended A.I.B. in Des Moines, concluding a secretarial course she worked at Town Mutual Insurance in Des Moines. After the sudden passing of her father in 1944, Helen returned to Goldfield to help farm for one year, then returned to Des Moines to work for Employer’s Mutual Casualty Insurance. On June 26, 1947, Helen was united in marriage with Alvin Stueland of Eagle Grove at the home of her mother. The couple farmed on the old home place two miles west of Goldfield until 1968, when they retired from farming and bought a home in Goldfield.
Helen worked part-time at the Dari-Y, Ron’s Restaurant and with lunch wagon at farm sales during the early 1960’s. After moving to town, she began working full-time at the Goldfield Cheese Mart, retiring in 1985 after 17 years. She continued to work part-time for about 10 years at the Dakotah Shoppe and Cheese Mart. Helen was a member of the Goldfield United Presbyterian Church, church choir and the Dainty Darners Sewing Club. She served as President of the Goldfield High School Alumni Association and chaired the 1967 Goldfield High School Alumni Banquet. Helen enjoyed music, baking, shopping, gardening, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Helen passed away at Careage of Clarion, on Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at the age of 85 years. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Alice Ruiter. Survivors include her husband, Alvin Stueland; daughter, Dianne Reichter and husband Arlo of Elm Grove, WI; son, Dennis Stueland and wife Susan of Santa Ana, CA; 4 granddaughters: Kristi Greenfield and husband David, Kari Schneider and husband Jonathan, Sarah Stueland and Laura Stueland; 5 great- grandchildren: Anna and Evan Greenfield and Ethan, Colin and Drew Schneider and a brother-in-law, Ron Ruiter of Goldfield.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 18, 2009, 11:00 A.M. at the United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield with Pastor Joyce Garton-Natte officiating. Visitation is Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
