BRITT, Iowa - Violet J. Sankey, 82, of Britt passed away Tuesday (Nov. 10, 2009) at Westview Care Center in Britt. Funeral services for Violet Sankey will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, at the Britt Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Joel DeBoer officiating. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt. Visitation for Violet Sankey will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W. in Britt, and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Violet Jean Sankey, the daughter of Guy and Lena (Vanlangen) Hassebrock, was born on June 19, 1927, in Kamrar. She was raised and educated in the Kamrar area graduating from Kamrar High School. Violet then attended the Cedar Falls Teacher's College receiving a War Time Certificate so she could teach right away. Violet was united in marriage to Bert J. Sankey on Dec. 28, 1948, at Kamrar Presbyterian Church. She taught country schools in the Humboldt, Eagle Grove and LuVerne areas before moving to Britt in 1961 where she taught elementary school. Violet returned to school receiving her bachelor's degree from Mankato State University, and continued teaching in Britt for another 10 years before her retirement. In retirement she tutored students as they needed it and helped Bert with the books at the station. Violet loved to knit, crochet, read, go on walks and travel with Bert and their dog, Daisy. She loved her family very much and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Violet was a member of the Britt Christian Reformed Church, Order of the Eastern Star and Rebekahs Lodge. She volunteered at Westview Care Center and would schedule rides for people getting cancer treatments.

Violet is survived by her two sons, Michael Sankey and his wife, Karen, of Algona and William Sankey and his wife, Vicky, of Forest City; five grandchildren, Robert Sankey, Joshua Sankey and his wife, Diana, Jenna (Sankey) Gaskill and her husband, Scott, William K. Sankey and Jacob Sankey; two great-grandchildren, Emry Sankey and Kaelyn Gaskill; three sisters-in-law, Esther Hassebrock of Ankeny, Lila Hassebrock of Des Moines and Lavon Lindhorst and her husband, Ralph, of Algona; as well as nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Lena Hassebrock; husband, Bert, in 2006; and her two brothers: Donald and Roger Hassebrock. Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt.
