JOHN E. KALVIG DIES IN HOSPITAL

Funeral Rites to Be on Monday Afternoon

John E. Kalvig, 56, of 640 S. Monroe, died at a local hospital at 11:05 p.m. Thursday, following an illness of 6 years. He had been a resident of Mason City about 10 years and was a retired contractor.

Mr. Kalvig was born Aug. 27, 1890 at Alta, Iowa. He continued to live there until the family moved to Belmond, where he was married to Bertha Asbe. They established their first home at Kanawha.

On July 29, 1918, he enlisted in the United States army and went overseas Sept. 30, 1918, with Company A of the 126th Engineers. He returned to the United States in 1919, at Chattanooga, Tenn.

He moved to Mason City in 1936, and was employed at the Montgomery Ward store, but retired in 1940 due to ill health. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church and the San Juan-Marne Post 733 of the Vetrans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are his wife, and 4 daughters, Mrs. Ed Dougherty, Washington D.C., Mrs. Floyd King, Mrs. Jack MacMurray and Virginia Kalvig, Mason City, and 3 sons, Bernard, Leroy and Johnny Kalvig all of Mason City, and 3 grandchildren, Carroll Marie Dougherty, Washington D.C., and Ronald Booth and Bobby King of Mason City.

Three brothers, Lewis Kalvig, Minneapolis, Carl Kalvig, Mason City and Elmer Kalvig, Kanawha also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and 4 brothers.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran church, with the Rev. Ernest A. Bergeson officiating Burial will be at Elmwood cemetery. Members of the V.F.W. will be in charge of military services at the gravesite. The McAuley and Son funeral home in charge.
