HAROLD HOBBS, LOCAL TRUCKER, TRAFFIC VICTIM IN NEW JERSEY TUESDAY MORNING
A Grinnell truck driver, Harold E. Hobbs, 40, died Tuesday morning at a Weehawken, N.J., hospital of injuries received early that same day when struck by a car while crossing a street at North Bergen, N.J. For the past 11 months Hobbs had been employed by the Ellsworth Trucking Co. of Eagle Grove and was in New Jersey on a trip for the trucking firm. Accident reportedly occurred during a snow storm. Driver of the car that struck Hobbs was Allan D. Weingarten, 25, of North Bergen.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the James-Schalinske Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Headland, assisted by Delbert Elliott, officiating. Interment will be in Hazelwood cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Grinnell American Legion post.
The son of Guy and Gertie McGee Hobbs, he was born July 26th, 1922, at Unionville, Mo. He attended the schools of Kellogg and Grinnell and on Aug. 8th, 1948, he was united in marriage with Tony Garrett at Unionville, Mo. Following their marriage, they made their home in Grinnell. To the union were born three children, Harold Anthony, Kevin, and Arminda Fae. Mr. Hobbs was a member of the Eagles Lodge, American Legion and Amvets. He was well known over the state as an outstanding stock car race driver. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a tail gunner with the 9th Bombardment Group in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
In additon to his wife and three children, he is also survived by his brothers, William G. of Kellogg, Robert of Montezuma, Albert of Kellogg, Roy of Michigan, Kenneth of Newton, Gerald of Newton and David of Kellogg. His parents preceded him in death.
