GEORGE WILLIAM GOELZ, age 95, of Grand Rapids and Mesa, Arizona, passed away on September 25, 2009.
He was born on September 21, 1914, in Belmond, Iowa, to George W. and Monica M. Goelz. He attended Belmond high school and graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering. George married Gertrude (Trudy) Heesemann in Chicago, Illinois, on June 11, 1938. In 1945, they moved to Grand Rapids from Valley City, ND where he had been the Chief Engineer of the Municipal Power Plant. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

George is survived by:
Trudy, his wife of 71 years
Daughters - Arlene (Dean) Scane of Evanston, Illinois, and Carolyn Goelz of Greenwood, Indiana
Grandchildren - Lori (Roger) Bertram, Jennifer (Patrick) McDonough, Brian (Clare) Scane, Kent (Susan) Christopherson, and Carrie (Brian) Kendrick
Great grandchildren - Breanna and Nathan Craven, Jacob, Leah and Anna Christopherson.

At the time of his retirement he was Chief Engineer and Senior Vice President of Blandin Paper Company, and a member of the board of directors. George had been Director, Secretary, and President of Blandin Wood Products, a Director of Quadna Mountain Corporation, and a member of the Grand Rapids Public Utilities Commission. An active member of Community Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids, he has been an elder and trustee. In 1969 George was named Presbyterian Sportsman of the Year. He was also a Life Member of Itasca Lodge No. 208 A.F. & A.M., Pokegama Chapter No. 102 Royal Arch Masons, Elkanah Commandery No. 30 and the Aad Temple Shrine. George was also a member of Cap Baker Lions Club in Grand Rapids, the North Star Shrine Club and Ducks Unlimited. In addition to his career and family, he relished his hunting, fishing, golfing, music, sports, and home workshop. George was the positive role model for his entire family. Memorials are preferred to the charity of your choice. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until the Memorial Service at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29th at the Rowe Funeral Home in Grand Rapids. Rev. Kimbrel Johnson will officiate.
