Marshalltown -- Herman T. Mickelson, age 90, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 23, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Webster City. There will be no visitation prior to the service but the family will greet friends following the service at a luncheon at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Honor Flight Program, to send WWII Veterans to Washington D.C. or to the Iowa Veterans Home.

The son of Michael and Annie (Odson) Mickelson, Herman was born on August 5, 1919, in Randall, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Margaret "Peggy" Watts. Herman proudly served in the United States Army during WWII. He worked as a carpenter and was a member of the Carpenter’s Local #106 in Des Moines.

Those left to honor his memory; a step daughter, Joyce L. Livingston in Mitchellville, two sisters, Marjorie Whipple of Humboldt, Iowa and Fern Shultz of Clarion, Iowa; a brother, H. Teddy Mickelson and his wife Louella of Phoenix, Arizona and a half brother Dennis Mickelson of Iowa City, Iowa. Also surviving are his step grandchildren, Connie Munson Wyatt and her husband Bobby, Robbie Jay-Hay and her husband David, Michelle Gildersleeve and her husband Bob, Dennis Flaws and his wife Loretta, and Robert Flaws and his wife Patty; nine great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Preceding Herman in death were his parents, wife, step daughter, LaVina "Dixie" Templeton, brother, Arnold; sisters Mildred Nerving and Alma Kelling and his step mother Dorothy.
