Dean McMullen, 60, of Marshalltown, died Friday, August 21st, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. He was born on November 11, 1948, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, he was the son of Donald and Evelyn (McNeil) McMullen. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, and later from ISU in accounting in 1973. Dean received his MBA from Drake University in 1976. Mr. McMullen also served our country honorably in the United States Navy. On November 24, 1973, he was united in marriage to Deborah "Debby" Naefke at St. John's Lutheran Church near Kanawha, Iowa. They made Marshalltown their home all of their married lives with the exception of two years in Pennsylvania. He was in the accounting department at Fisher Controls until his retirement in May of this year. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, served on the Iowa River Hospice Board, Marshalltown Wednesday Night Duplicate Bridge Club, and supported the United Way and the Women's Center on May Street. He treasured his family, especially his grandchildren, and had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed life to the fullest, playing cards and golf, cheering on ISU, watching "The Mummy" with his granddaughter Janea and giving of his time. Although he will be greatly missed, his family is comforted by his faith, knowing where he is at now and with no more pain. In death he has rejoined his parents and some four-legged friends including dog Marvin and cat, Pumpkin.

Left to cherish his memory are Debby, his loving wife, of 35 years; daughter, Jennifer (Mac) Jump, of Adair; son, Patrick (Lauren) McMullen, of Newton; grandchildren, Janea and Evelyn Jump and Benjamin McMullen and one on the way; his sisters, Kathleen Smith and Patty Lee, both of Georgetown, Texas; his father and mother-in-law, Harold and Audrey Naefke, of Clarion, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Cindy Khan, of Urbandale, and Kathy Naefke, of St. Paul, Minn.; as well as many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., on Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 1011 South 3rd Avenue, Marshalltown, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, at the church, with Pastor Gregg Davison officiating and assisted by pastoral care coordinator Jolene Jebsen. He will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the church or the Iowa River Hospice.
