Deane Kramer passed away at a local convalescent home, Friday, July 31, 2009. He was 88 years old.

Deane was born in Clarion, Iowa on December 20, 1920 to Gustave and Ulta Kramer. He grew up on a farm outside of Kankakee, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelors Degree and continued his education there to receive his Master's Degree in teaching Social Studies. He taught a year in Illinois and moved to California where he taught Social Studies for 25 years at Watsonville High School, retiring in 1979. Deane had many interests. He belonged to the Chess Club and Rockhound Club. His outside activities were S.I.R.S. and Coin Club, and was active with the La Selva Beach Improvement Association, all of which he served as president at one time or another. After retirement, he had a small craft business and volunteered in the La Selva Beach community; repainting signs, picking up litter on his long walks and was a regular at the Fourth of July Celebration, running the horseshoe competition.

Deane is survived by his wife, Colleen, of 56 years; sons, Glenn and Roger; grandsons, Christopher, Nicholas, Andrew, and Ryan; sister-in-law, Agnes Kramer; sister, Patricia Wharton and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Darwin Kramer and sisters, Maxine Edwards and Mildred Atlas.

Memorial services will be held in honor of Deane's life at the United Presbyterian Church of Watsonville, 112 E. Beach St. Watsonville, on Sunday, August 9th at 2 p.m. Parking is available at the church at the rear of the building through Trafton Alley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts of remembrance made to the United Presbyterian Church of Watsonville or to Hospice of Santa Cruz 940 Disc Drive, Scotts Valley, CA 95066. Mehl's Colonial Chapel has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
