MESERVEY, IA --Joseph T. Slusher, 68, of Meservey, died Wednesday (June 26, 1996) at Knox County Hospital, Barbourville, Ky. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Salem United Methodist Church, Meservey, with the Rev. Jim Gochenoner officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Wm. Schmalle Post #171. Burial will be in Meservey Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Grarup Funeral Home, Meservey.

John Slusher was born on July 25, 1927, in Stanford, Ky., the son of Zachary "Morgan" and Martha (Kinningham) Slusher. He attended school in Knox County. He entered the United States Navy in 1945 and returned home in August of 1946 to complete his schooling, graduating with the class of 1948. In 1949 he began driving truck for Red Fleetway, which was owned by Dr. Jurgenson and Gordon Greer. He then purchased his own truck and started driving for Brady Truckline until 1982 when he began driving for CRST out of Cedar Rapids. In 1984 he started working for Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

He was united in marriage to Faye Hubbs on July 7, 1950, in Barbourville, Ky. They made their home in Barbourville for a short time before moving to Meservey. Joe enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing pool and cards, and watching sports, especially the ISU Cyclones, Kentucky Wildcats, and the Boston Celtics.

He is survived by his wife, Faye, of Meservey; five daughters and their husbands, Doris and Terry Markwitz, of Atkins, Wanda Slusher, of Forest City, Pam and Mike Gobeli, of Meservey, Betty and Mike Jensen, of Thornton, and Linda and Jeff Stokes, of Kentwood, Mich.; one son, George, and his wife Linda, of North Liberty; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth, Lucas, Robert, Joseph, Ashley, Kelly, Emily and Zachary; two sisters, Jane Jurgenson, of Clear Lake, and Blanche Greer, of Meservey; two brothers, Bill Slusher, of Overland Park, Ks., and Ron Slusher, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; his father-in-law, Jeff Hubbs, of Barbourville, Ky.; and two brothers-in-law, Paul Hubbs, of Barbourville, Ky., and Herbert Hubbs, of Corbin, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and three sisters.
