MESERVEY, Iowa--Elmer G. Messelheiser, 80, of 111 N. Ninth St., Clear Lake, died Monday (Nov. 17, 1997) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Rodney Meester of First Reformed Church, Meservey, officiating. Interment will be in the Meservey Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Elmer was born Feb. 22, 1917, on the family farm, rural Meservey, the son of William and Frieda (Drew) Messelheiser. He graduated from Meservey High School. Elmer farmed after graduating from high school and then married Mae Elizabeth Strasburg. He served in the Army during World War II. Following the service, he came back to Meservey and continued to farm. He later operated a Standard Oil bulk truck for 10 years and then farmed from 1958-1966. They then moved back to Meservey and he was a millwright worker until his retirement. Elmer married Jeralynn Haspany Dec. 11, 1991, in Albert Lea, Minn. Elmer was a nature boy, enjoyed growing herbs, gardening, trout fishing, hunting, canine companions, helping other people and his bees. He was a avid collector.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Jeralynn Haspany of Clear Lake; three children, Janet Messelheiser of Melbourne, Australia, Robert Messelheiser and his wife, Julie, of Altoona and Dean Messelheiser and his wife, Becky, of Niceville, Fla.; three stepchildren, Pam Kellogg and her husband, Doug, of Clear Lake, Beth Cooley and her husband, Brian, of Boulder, Colo., and Ginger Sullivan and his husband, Thaddeus, of Portland, Ore.; eight grandchildren, Bret Messelheiser, Dawn Ledin, Heidi Messelheiser, Landon Messelheiser, Matthew Messelheiser, Emily Messelheiser, Levi Kellogg and Logan Kellogg; and one great-grandchild, Caitlan Messelheiser. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and his first wife, Mae, in 1987.
