THORNTON, IA — Adeline Muhlenbruch, 78, of Thornton, died Saturday (April 21, 2007) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at Swaledale United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Keith Scott presiding. Interment will be at Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, 107 N. Second St. in Thornton. Memorials may be directed to Adeline Muhlenbruch Memorial Fund or Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.

Adeline Leona Muhlenbruch was born on Jan. 17, 1929, near Meservey. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Kessler) Gruis. Her first year of school was at Meservey Public School, then the family moved to a farm near Thornton and Adeline graduated from Thornton High School in 1946. Adeline then worked as a telephone operator in Mason City. On Nov. 14, 1948, Adeline was united in marriage with Mervin D. Muhlenbruch. They lived in Mason City for a few months, then moved to a farm by Swaledale. In 1978 they moved from the farm to their present home in Thornton. She was a member of the Swaledale United Methodist Church, was active in the Women's Club, Olde Ole Club, cooked for the Thornton Lions Club for 30 years, was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Thornton Library Board. With her family and friends they made many trips fishing, and attending fairs. She enjoyed watching her grandkids' sporting events and concerts which were very special to her. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing and mending for others in the community. She enjoyed playing a good game of golf and was blessed with a hole-in-one in June 2006 at the Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Thornton. She thoroughly enjoyed the trips out east to visit her sister, Janice, and also the trips they made together to many different places.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Kay (David) Martin, Nancy (Ron) Payton and Brian (Pam) Muhlenbruch, all of Thornton; grandchildren: Michele (Matt) Smuck, Amy and Dana Payton, Trisha and Cole Muhlenbruch and Shannon and Rob Martin; great-grandchildren: Derek, Andrew, Ryan and Noah Smuck; sister: Janice (Jack) Hegenbarth, of Wilmington, Delaware; and many nieces, nephews and a large extended family. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband (Mervin); and granddaughter, Laura Payton.
