Corwith woman dies in crash days after birthday, anniversary
By PEGGY SENZARINO

CORWITH, IA — Amy Lynn Hefty of Corwith was on her way home from work at First Citizens Bank in Kanawha Wednesday evening when her car was struck by a semitrailer.

Hefty, who had celebrated her 27th birthday on Monday, was killed in the accident. “Of course we think she was very special,” said her grandfather, Wayne Pope of Mason City. “She was a quiet, well-educated young lady who loved her animals and flowers and collected things like Precious Moments and stuff,” Pope said.

Hefty worked as an administrative assistant at the Kanawha bank and was a graduate of North Iowa Area Community College. Pope said his granddaughter’s love of animals included her two dogs and a cat. She was an only child but had a large extended family.

Pope said Amy and her husband, Lee, had just returned from a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida in celebration of their first wedding anniversary. Pope said Lee had spoken to his wife just minutes before the crash. Hefty attended the Christian Reformed Church in Kanawha. She had attended the Open Bible Church in Clear Lake for 26 years, Pope said.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Hefty, 27, was traveling westbound on County Road B-55 when her car was hit by a tractor-trailer driven by Allen James Enabnit, 46, Clear Lake. The accident was reported at 5:23 p.m. The State Patrol report said Enabnit was northbound on County Road R-26 when he failed to stop at a stop sign and entered the intersection, colliding with the Hefty vehicle. Hefty was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Enabnit was driving for BMC Aggregates LC. Enabnit was taken to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa by Mayo Air Care. He was listed in fair condition Thursday.
