Viola "Vi" F. Novak, 89, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, in Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Linda Hansen Bibb. Burial: Czech National Cemetery. Friends may call from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.

Vi was born Nov. 23, 1912, in Blairsburg. On Aug. 11, 1934, she was united in marriage to Lewis J. Novak in Eagle Grove. In 1942, Vi and Lewis moved to Cedar Rapids. During World War II, Vi helped in the war effort by working at Quaker Oats. In 1954, Vi and Lewis purchased the Novak Monument Company. Vi helped run the company until their retirement in 1976. Vi was a charter member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1722. She was a 48-year member of Salem United Methodist Church. Vi's many friends will remember her love of family, her home and her expert skill at pinochle!

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Conrad and husband Frank of Marion; a grandson, Christopher Conrad and wife Kate Martin of Milwaukee, Wis.; two granddaughters, Cheryl Conner and husband Tracy of Cedar Rapids and Tracy Conrad Schumann and husband Andreas of Akron, Ohio; a brother, Howard Pelz of La Verne, Minn.; four sisters, Lois Boschert of Arden Hills, Minn., Dorothy Uhlenkemp of Redwood Falls, Minn., Phyllis Ellis of Superior, Wis., and Ruth Kyle of Felton, Calif.; and a special friend, Donna Naaktgeboren of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis J. Novak; her parents, Ben and Evelyn Pelz; a sister, Delores Pelz; and a brother, Harold Pelz. A memorial fund has been established for Salem United Methodist Church.
