Bernard Herman Gruis, 81, of Island City, Oregon died Feb. 23 at a local care center. The service was scheduled for 3 p.m. today at the Summerville Cemetery Chapel, with the Rev. Mark Schlessman officiating. Private inurnment will be at the cemetery. Mr. Gruis was born May 8, 1920, to Edward and Sophia Dorenkamp Gruis in Belmond, Iowa. He was a truck driver for four years in World War II. He married Bethel Vandermulen on April 15, 1945, in La Grande, where he was an inspector for El Paso Natural Gas, now called Northwest Pipeline, until retiring in 1974. Mr. Gruis was a member of the Eagles Lodge in La Grande. He enjoyed carpentry, camping, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Cassandra and Steve Waibel of La Grande; two brothers, Robert H. and his wife, Pat, and Art and his wife, Shirley, of La Grande; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Three sisters and two brothers died earlier. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or to a favorite charity in lieu of flowers in care of Loveland Funeral Chapel, 1508 Fourth St., La Grande 97850.
