Robert C. Halgrim of Ft. Myers passed away peacefully on Monday, May 2, 2005 at the Shady Rest Care Pavilion in Ft. Myers. Mr. Halgrim was born Sept. 9, 1905 in Humboldt, Iowa the son of Cornelius and Nellie Halgrim. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Mary E. Halgrim. Mr. Halgrim is survived by his two sons, Robert (Caroline) Halgrim and Tommy (Venie) Halgrim, five grandchildren, John (Joanie) Halgrim, Bobby Halgrim, Erik (Summer) Halgrim, Chris Halgrim and Audrey (Matt) Strelo and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Halgrim moved to Ft. Myers with his family in 1914. He graduated from Ft. Myers High School in 1926 and attended Cornell University from 1927 to 1929. Mr. Halgrim received an honorary certificate from Cornell University in April 2005 for his achievements and work at the Edison Winter Home. He served as the first curator of the Edison home from 1948 until he retired in 1971. During his life he was active as a member of the Ft. Myers Chamber of Commerce, Edison Pageant of Light, life member of the Lions Club and a founding member of the Fisherman's Class at the First Presbyterian Church. His primary hobby was collecting and hybridizing crotons. He also loved his work at the Edison Winter Home and it played a large role in influencing his life. Memorial service will be celebrated Friday, May 6th at 4:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church, 2438 Second St. Family will receive friends Thursday May 5th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Harvey-Engelhardt-Metz Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Blvd. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Fisherman's Class at First Presbyterian Church.
