Minnie Olena Hartwig Gulick, the daughter of Jesse and Lena (Smith) Hartwig, was born February 19, 1923 in rural Meservey Iowa. Minnie was one of three living children. Her brothers were Wesley and August Hartwig. She lived there as a young child and was educated at a country school in rural Thornton. Minnie’s parents were farmers and she spent her early years on the farm. On May 28, 1948, she married Norman Gulick at the Methodist Church in Hampton. The earlier years of their marriage were spent in Hampton. They moved to Allison in 1969. Minnie was a homemaker until 1980, when she and Norman purchased the Allison Drug store. The ownership was in Minnie’s name - for the first time in her life, she was a businesswoman. She operated the drug store until 1988 when she retired. As a businesswoman in Allison, she was very active in the Allison Commercial Club. She and Bob Foss started the Hamburger Day celebration as well as Allison Day. A faithful servant of the United Church of Christ in Allison, Minnie was Women’s Fellowship president for many years. Minnie loved to garden and was a member of the Allison Garden Buddies. She was a member of the Auxiliary of the American Legion in Allison. Minnie will be remembered as the best doughnut and chocolate cake maker in Franklin and Butler counties, as a quilter, and gardener. She and Norman attended many dances with friends. She loved to travel to Branson, St. Louis and California, but her favorite pastime was fishing with Norman in Minnesota, Canada and along the trout streams in northeast Iowa.

Minnie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Norman, and their five children: Patricia (David) Sackville of Hampton, David (Joanne) Gulick of Cedar Falls, Debra (Hugh) Lore of Clarksville, Kent (Pam) Gulick of Allison, Linda (Dennis) Shear of Dumont, 11 grandchildren: Scott, Kay, Gabe, Jake, Zach, Dana, Daniel, Levi, Brooke, Jessica and Brittany and 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her sisters-in-law: Arlene Hartwig Wingrove of Marshalltown, Andrea Gulick of Quincy, California, Marcia Gulick Bielicki of Villaridge, Missouri, her cousins: Beulah (Wayne) Schmalle of Thornton and Ilene Johnson of Parkersburg. Minnie was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one infant sister.
