March 26, 1985Prophetstown, IL - Howard R. Moews, 67, 314 W. 3rd St., Prophetstown, died Monday morning at his home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Yorktown, with the Rev. Joyce Heintz, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Prophetstown, with Military Honors by American Legion Post 522. Visitation will be at the Gardner Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established.
Howard Moews was born on March 20, 1918 in Belmond, Iowa, the son of Frank and Anna Pletsch Moews. He graduated from Prophetstown High School and attended Blackburn College. On Dec. 15, 1942 he married Dorothy Varney, Tampico, at St. Paul's Parsonage. He served in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant during World War II for five years and was awarded the Purple Heart with a Cluster and Bronze Star. He was a member of the American Legion Post 522, Prophetstown, served as chairman of the council of St. Paul's Lutheran Church for 12 years. He farmed in the Prophetstown community for 22 years after which he owned and operated Moews Electric for the past 16 years in Prophetstown. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Kelly (Sandra) Little, Champaign; one son, Douglas, Brookfield, Wis.; one granddaughter; and two brothers, Frank, Prophetstown, and Stanley, Morrison. Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother, Edward.
