BELMOND, IA -- Alford Bowen Gunn, 83, of Belmond, died Tuesday (March 17, 1998) at his home in Belmond. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Christ Congregational, Belmond, with the Rev. Cindy Mueller officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery with graveside military rites by the Belmond Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy may direct them to the Alford Gunn Memorial Fund.

Alford Bowen Gunn was born on May 18, 1914, in Van Buren County, Michigan, to Irwin and Blanche (Bowen) Gunn. He attended the Lake Street School in Kalamazoo, Mich., and later in life, went on to obtain his high school diploma. He was holding various jobs from 1928 to 1941.He entered the United States Army at Kalamazoo, Mich., in February of 1941, and served during World War II in New Guinea until October of 1945. On May 5, 1943, Alford married Anna Jane Pass at Camp Howze. They had three children. In 1948, Al went back into the service and remained there until he retired on July 31, 1969. He was active in the Army during three conflicts -- World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. At his retirement, he had served his country for 26 years. After his retirement from the Army, Al was employed at the Clark Equipment Co. in Battle Creek, Mich. where he worked for 10 years. Alford and Anna Jane moved to Belmond in 1990. Al's family was always his first priority, and he was a strong Christian. His wife passed away in 1995. Al truly loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Alford was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge of Richmond, Mo. and also a member of the V.F.W.

He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Hill and her husband, Tom, of Belmond, Iowa; son, Tom Gunn, of Belmond; grandson, Bob Hill and his wife, Melissa, of Belmond; granddaughter, Barbara Meyer and her husband, Jeff, of Corwith; great grandchildren, Lucas Meyer and Brooklyn Hill; brother, Dayton Gunn and his wife, Doris, of Largo, Fla.; and three sisters, Viola Hezler and her husband, Julius, of Battle Creek, Mich.; Glenora Snyder and her husband, Wes, of Augusta, Mich.; and Erlene Johnson and her husband, Al, of Brooklyn, Mich. Alford was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Jane Ann; and his wife, Anna Jane, in 1995.
