Funeral services for Charlene Ellwanger will be held on Sunday, September 4th, 2:00 p.m., at the First Christian Church in Sac City with Reverend Sharla Hulsey officiating. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home. Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Saturday, September 3rd, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City.

W. Charlene Ellwanger, age 89, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2005, at Loring Hospital in Sac City. Charlene was born December 30, 1915, in Sac County, Douglas Township, the daughter of Homer and Florence (Persinger) Eble. She was raised in Sac City, attended country school northeast of Sac City, and graduated from Sac City High School with the Class of 1932. On September 5, 1940, Charlene was united in marriage to Lawrence “Pete” Ellwanger at Clarinda, Iowa. They were blessed with four children: Alan, Kristen, Jean, and Gail. Charlene was baptized in 1930 at the First Christian Church in Sac City where she remained a lifetime member. She served as an Elder, Deaconess, and officer in the Christian Women’s Fellowship.

They lived on a farm north of Sac City for 16 years, and in 1957 moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa, where Pete farmed and Charlene worked at the egg plant in Clarion. In 1964 they farmed near Corydon, Iowa, and Charlene worked at Neely’s Manufacturing, moving back to Sac City in 1977 where they retired from farming. Helping her husband on the farm and raising her family were Charlene’s greatest accomplishments. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed square dancing, social clubs, card clubs, coffee group, shopping, and entertaining family and friends. Charlene also enjoyed being a volunteer after retirement, serving on the Care Review Board at Park View Care Center, and helping in her church, community, and neighborhood.

Survivors include her son Alan Paul Ellwanger and wife Mavis of Waverly, IA; and daughters: Kristen Florence Kittrell and husband John of Johnston, IA, and Jean Jocelyn Ellwanger of Tallassee, Alabama; three grandchildren: Kim Kittrell Stewart and husband Scott of Clive, IA, Bradley Ellwanger of Newton, IA, and Allyson Ellwanger of West Des Moines; four great-grandchildren: Chloe, Claudia, and Greta Stewart of Clive and Allyson Lee Ellwanger of Waverly, IA. Other survivors include her sisters: Helen Coler Schroeder of McAllen, TX, Jean Clause of Laga Vista, TX, and Margy Klassi of Apple Valley, CA; many extended family members and friends. Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; Homer Eble and Florence Eble Nervig; husband Pete; and daughter Gail Ann Ellwanger in infancy.
