Belmond Independent, IowaEugene J. Guth, 79, of Meservey, died on Monday, May 8, 2006, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City. Funeral services were held at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with Rev. Rodney Meester presiding. Interment was in the Meservey Cemetery.
Eugene Junior, was born on April 2, 1927 in Mason City, a son of Frank and Clara (Bier) Guth. Until age five his family lived on a farm north of Meservey. Afterward his family moved to his current farm (a Century Farm) where he lived ever since. Eugene graduated from the Meservey High School in 1945 and farmed with his father. On September 23, 1948, Eugene married Amelia Barkema at the Immanuel Reformed Church Parsonage near Belmond. Eugene was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church, where he served as an elder. He was a 4-H Leader, member of the Lions, and served on the Meservey School Board and the Meservey-Thornton School Board. He also was on the board of Hancock County Oil and the Waterloo Service Company. Besides Amelia, Eugene's biggest love was farming and watching the crops grow. The last couple years he traveled around the farms on his ATV. Antique tractor pulls and woodworking were also favorite activities for him. Eugene had a way with kids, and special memories were of the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Francis; and son, Gary. Survivors include his wife; son, Larry Guth of Clarion; daughter, Darlene (Lee) Haines of Mason City; grandchildren, Lance (Dawn) Guth, Heather Guth, Justin Haines and A.J. Haines; great-grandchildren, Noah Guth and Peyton Guth; brother, Everett (Lucille) Guth of Klemme; and sister, Marvyl Frank of New Hampton.
