Clarice J. Quilling, 86, of Menomonie, died, Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire. The former Clarice Ness was born April 25, 1911, in the Town of Lawton, Pierce County, to Benjamin and Randa (Jackson) Ness. She was raised in Wilson and attended Wilson Grade School. In 1929, Clarice graduated from Kanawha High School in Kanawha, Iowa. She then attended Dunn County Norman School in 1930. Clarice married Earl Quilling Dec. 24, 1930, in Stillwater, MN. She taught at several schools in the Menomonie area, including Roach country school and Menomonie Junior High, retiring in 1977. Throughout the years Clarice continued her education, receiving a teaching degree in 1955 from Wisconsin State College in Eau Claire. She also received a bachelor of science degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, and a master's degree in education from UW-Eau Claire in 1968. Clarice was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the Dunn County Retired Teachers Association.

Clarice is survived by her husband, Earl Quilling of Menomonie; a nephew, Bill (Jean) Schleusner of Menomonie; other nieces and nephews; a great-niece, Tammy (Mike) Polta of River Falls; a great-nephew, Shane Schleusner and fiancée, Alicia, of Omaha, NE; other great-nieces and great-nephews; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, and one brother, Robert.

Funeral services were Friday, Dec. 26, at the Little Elk Creek Lutheran Church in the Town of Red Cedar, Dunn County, with the Rev. Richard Klabunde officiating. Burial was in Froen Cemetery in the Town of Red Cedar. Judy Schleusner was organist and Rudy Schleusner, soloist, for the funeral. Pallbearers were Don Olson, John Soley, Art Karczewski, Ron Bryan, Tom Olson and David Young. Arlene Cartwright was an honorary pallbearer. Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie handled arrangements.
