Brough conducted the services at the church and the burial service at the grave was in charge of Primrose Rebekah Lodge No. 179. The church was filled to its capacity by a large congregation of the friends of the deceased. Mrs. Pepper had lived in this community for 62 years and was among the very oldest settlers in this community.
Mrs. Pepper was born in Connecticut April 5th, 1854. At the age of seven she came with her parents to Rowan, Iowa and lived there during the years of childhood and early womanhood. On February 14, 1872, she was united in marriage to David H. Pepper and settled on their farm in Vernon Township where they lived until they came to make their home in Dows in 1900. On June 23, 1921, she was bereaved in the death of her husband, with whom she had walked the way of life for nearly fifty years.
Mrs. Pepper was the mother of four sons, all of whom survive her: Herman R. of Waverly, Iowa; Julius L., David B. and Henry H. of Vernon township. She also leaves eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and three brothers and one sister. The latter are Robert and William Duffy of Rowan; James of Cherokee and Mrs. Roberta Berryhill of St. Paul, Minnesota.
Mrs. Pepper was a good woman, always willing to do a kindness, a friend and helper to the sick and a neighbor to all. She has lived her life almost wholly in this community and had a host of friends who will greatly miss her from their midst. She was associated with the Presbyterian church, an attendant at its services and active in the work of the societies. She was a member of Primrose Rebekah lodge and adorned by her life the teachings of the order.
