5 October 1864 -- 24 February 1917

Bertha Korth Butenhoff was born in Zarpen, [Stormarn, Schleswig-Holstein] Germany October 5, 1864. At the early age of three years she came with her parents to this country, settling in the state of Wisconsin, from whence after a few years, the family moved to Franklin County, Iowa where she resided up to March, 1916, when with her family, she again moved back to the state of Wisconsin. On the 23rd day of February, 1888, the deceased was united in marriage to G. H. Butenhoff. Eleven children were born to this union, of which number three have preceded the mother to the home beyond. The departure of Mrs. Butenhoff from this life marks the passing of a noble christian character, who while gone, has during her life, set in motion influences that will work good for time and for eternity. Her life was devoted to her loved ones, laying special emphasis on the training of her children; instilling in their minds the duties and privileges of christian life. Yet with all the duties of a mother of so large a family, she always had a ready hand of sympathy to help such that were in trouble. Mrs. Butenhoff was confirmed in the German Lutheran church, in childhood, of which church she remained a faithful member to the end.

For several years the deceased has been a great physical sufferer, yet through it all she was patient and reconciled. When the angel of death drew near, she said to her oldest son, who had just prayed with her: "God’s will be done, and the Lord helps you."

The deceased leaves to mourn her departure, an affectionate, kind husband, eight children, Adolph of Dows, Iowa; Mrs. E. A. Thomas of Dexter, Minn; Arthur, Leo, Gustave, Hilda, Lulu and Walter, all of Earl, Wis.; her aged mother, five brothers and three sisters, all living in this vicinity, besides many more distant relatives and a large number of friends. Funeral services conducted by W. C. Bergmann, took place at the Morgan Township M. E. church Tuesday afternoon, February 27th.
