BELMOND, Iowa -- Dr. Ernest O. Gunderson, 89, of Berkeley, Calif., formerly of Belmond, died Sunday (June 4, 1995) in Berkeley, Calif. Graveside memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday (June 23, 1995) at the Belmond Cemetery, with the Rev. Lowell Halverson officiating. Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, is in charge of local arrangements.

Dr. Ernest O. Gunderson was born Dec. 15, 1905, in Hancock County, the son of Andrea Gunderson and Gunder A. Gunderson. Ernie graduated from Belmond High School. He received his M.D. from the University of Iowa Medical School in 1933. He began his ophthalmic instruction at the Pennsylvania Post Graduate School of Medicine. After his residency there, he came to California to join the Stanford and University of California Service at San Francisco County Hospital and later was resident ophthalmologist at the University of California Hospital. In 1940, Dr. Gunderson was certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. As an Army doctor, he served as a consultant at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital, Oakland, Calif. Dr. Gunderson was called to active duty in 1941 and served more than five years as head of the eye department at Madigan General Hospital, Fort Lewis, Wash., and Fort Douglas Hospital, Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a colonel in the United States Army Retired Reserves. After the war, Dr. Gunderson was in private practice in Berkeley, Calif. He was assistant ophthalmologist at Cowell Hospital on the University of California campus and was on the staff of two other Berkeley hospitals, Alta Bates and Herrick. He is survived by his brother, Gaylord A. Gunderson of Warroad, Minn.
