Irene E. Dannewitz, 83, died November 15, 2000 at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond. Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 18, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond, with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Music was provided by Janyce Kinseth, organist; Maxine Whitty, cantor. Casket bearers were John Dannewitz, Mark Dannewitz, Chad Dannewitz, Mike Dannewitz, Randy Dannewitz, and Lance Floy. Ushers were Terry Anderson and Bob McNamara. Interment was at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery near Belmond. Special services were on Friday, Nov. 17 with a parish rosary in the afternoon and a scriptural wake service in the evening.

Irene Elizabeth McDonnell was born at Whittemore on May 7, 1917, the daughter of Thomas and Mary King McDonnell. She attended Presentation Academy in Whittemore and graduated in 1935. She then attended beauty school in Waterloo, becoming a beautician. She operated beauty shops in Algona, Cherokee and Belmond. Irene was united in marriage to Mervin Dannewitz on January 2, 1939, at Whittemore they had six children. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and four brothers. Irene is survived by her husband, Mervin "Danny" Dannewitz; her children and spouses, Betty Dannewitz of Hazelton; Karen and Richard Floy of Thornton, John and Beverly Dannewitz of Napa, CA, Mike and Karen Dannewitz of Mesa, AZ; Mark and Shannon Dannewitz of Elk Grove, CA, Randy and Lyndi Dannewitz of Sebastopol, CA; 13 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Zeta Turner of Ames.
