February 4, 2009Elsie Thompson, age 86, of Ames, died Friday, January 30, 2009 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Memorial services were held on Monday, February 2, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Radcliffe. A time of refreshment and visitation was held following the service at the church. Her cremated remains will be buried in the Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
Elsie Marcella Strietelmier was born November 18, 1922, to Arthur and Marie (Orr) Strietelmier. Elsie, her two sisters, and a brother were raised by their grandparents, Fred and Cora Orr. She attended school at Eagle Grove, Iowa and was a member of the Methodist Church. On June 29, 1938, she was married to Burton Thompson of Clarion, Iowa. Burton and Elsie were married for 70-12 years. To this union, they had three children; Marlene, Charles and Caroline. Burton and Elsie lived in the Holmes-Clarion area for about 11 years, and then in 1949 bought a farm southwest of Radcliffe, Iowa. In 1982, they moved from the farm to a home in Roland. In 2008, they moved to Ames where they now resided. She enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends. She and Burton enjoyed taking bus trips across the states. Elsie was a member of Salem Lutheran Church for 59 years and for many years belonged to Salem Ladies Aid.
Elsie leaves to mourn her husband, Burton of Ames; son Charles and wife Tilda of Ames; daughter, Caroline of Story City; a sister, Dorothy Jorgenson of Fort Dodge, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Natalie Montross and husband Steve of Winterset, Iowa, Gerald Claude of Saipan, Major Kelvin Claude of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, Michelle and Michael Thompson of Ames, Jennifer Swenson of Story City, and Kari and husband Jeremy Erdman of Taylor Falls, Minnesota; five great-grandchildren, Christina Claude, Brandon, Brittany and Stephanie Montross, Megan Claude; along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, sister Juanita Ralston, brother, Bernard Strietelmier, daughter, Marlene Claude, sons-in-law, Clayton Claude and Don Swenson and great-grandson, Christopher Claude. Elsie loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and looked forward to their visits or calls. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Lutheran Church, Radcliffe, IA. Boeke Funeral Home.
