Gary P. Smith, 60, of Webster City, a former Fort Dodge resident, died Saturday, February 28, 2004 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines from complications during a kidney transplant operation. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Webster City, with Rev. Scott Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post # 191.

Gary Paul Smith, son of Paul and Geraldine Lunning Smith, was born December 4, 1943 at Webster City. He graduated from Eagle Grove high school in 1962. From 1962 to 1968, he served with the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk as a aircraft mechanic at Vietnam, Australia, Alaska and San Diego, Ca. Following his discharge, he worked for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad, then for the Fort Dodge School District for many years. He retired due to failing health.

He is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, Michael P. Smith of Des Moines; Jeremy and Rochelle Smith of Kansas City, Mo.; special friend, Donna McBurney of Webster City; former wives, Lana Champion of Phoenix, Az.; Bonnie Nedved of Fort Dodge; his parents, Paul and Geraldine Smith of Webster City; sister, Lynn Merrifield of Cleveland, Ohio; several nieces and nephews. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, American Legion Post # 191 and A.A.
