HUMBOLDT - Dexter V. Thomas, 80, of Humboldt passed away Tuesday evening at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Thor Lutheran Church with interment in East Ullensvang Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday prior to services at the church. The Mason-Lindhart Funeral Home in Humboldt is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Betty of Humboldt; daughter, Nancy Thomas of Clear Lake; sons, Harry (Jenny) of Humboldt and Paul (Diane) of Kamrar; foster son, Jeffrey (Celeste) Coates of Los Angeles, CA; grandchildren, Lindsey, Clarissa, Ryan, and Kelly Thomas and Gabriel, Cameron, Jessie Coates; great-grandchildren, Sierra and Jordan Thomas. His parents preceded him in death.

Dexter Vertis Thomas, the son of Everett and Mary (Bridges) Thomas was born August 8, 1928 in Shoals, Indiana. When he was two the Thomas family moved to the Eagle Grove area where Dexter attended country schools and in 1946 graduated from Eagle Grove High School. After his education he took up work at Kalo Brick and Tile near Fort Dodge, he also worked for Davenport Feed and Grain. On December 18, 1949 he was united in marriage to Betty Thomas and the two made their home on the farm near Eagle Grove. It was there that Dexter farmed until his retirement. In November of 2005 Dexter and Betty moved to Springvale Assisted Living in Humboldt. He lived there until last August when he moved in to the North Care Center and then the Long Term Care Unit of the Humboldt hospital. Mr. Thomas was an active member of the Thor Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and taught Sunday school. He was also active in the food pantry and the share program and was a member of the UDMO board and the Hunger Task Force. Dexter enjoyed traveling in his retirement especially making trips to Branson. Mr. Thomas took pleasure in volunteering for various organizations and his services will be missed. Most of all, Dexter enjoyed time spent with family.
