Edmund Simon “Eddie” Elbert was born August 15, 1927, in Whittemore, Iowa, the son of Simon and Anna (Kollasch) Elbert, Jr. He grew up in Whittemore and attended school at Presentation Academy where he graduated in 1944. He then went on to attend Loras College, graduating in 1948. Eddie then went to work for Retail Credit Company in Des Moines, Iowa. On September 9, 1950, Eddie was united in marriage to Mary Farrell at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore. After their marriage they lived in Des Moines before moving to Renwick where Eddie was the General Manager for Ray Abbas Chevrolet from 1952-1953. In February of 1954, Eddie and his brother, Leonard purchased Elbert Chevrolet in Whittemore from George Elbert. He also ran Elbert Chevrolet and Olds in Eldora, Elbert Motor Company in Pocahontas and Laurens and in 2002 opened Elbert Motor Company in Algona, where he was presently working. He was a member of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association of which he was President in 1981; member of the National Automobile Dealers Association, serving as a Director from 1989-98, and also serving as Mid-West Regional Vice-President and a Convention Chairman in 1995. In 1983, Eddie was a Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award Finalist, which is based on business achievement and community services. Eddie was still very involved in his community being a member of the Whittemore Community Club, Gun Club, Betterment Committee and a 40 year member of the Whittemore Fire Department. He was instrumental in the building of the Whittemore Golf Course and Whittemore Housing and started the Whittemore Ambulance Service. He was past-chairman of the Good Samaritan Communities Advisory Board in Algona and for 33 years was on the Board of Directors at Farmers State Bank. Eddie was a member of St. Michael’s Parish and St. Michael’s Holy Name Society.

Eddie died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa. He was 79. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Whittemore; children, Dan and Maureen Elbert and family, Mick and Patty Elbert and family, Ellen and Ron Meyer and family all of Whittemore, Eileen and Chuck Bell and daughter of Algona; sisters, Coletta Mullin of Whittemore, Alma Abbas of Hailey, Idaho; sisters-in-law, Caroline Elbert of Whittemore and Millie Elbert of Algona and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Gerald and Leonard Elbert and sister, Luella Murphy. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the discretion of the family.
